I began the Yoni Shield project after reading several influential books: Possessing the Secret of Joy by Alice Walker; Women Who Run with the Wolves, Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype by Clarissa Pinkola Estes; and Flight of the Seventh Moon, The Teaching of the Shields by Lynn V. Andrew.

These novels explore the multidimensional aspects of being a woman and the process of womanhood. Lessons and teaching were conveyed through stories of individuation, mythology, folklore, and superstition, cross culture and cross time - both tangible and liminal. 

The Yoni Shield series, which began in the early 1990s, parallels a personal journey of womanhood, its cycles of fertility, expressions of intimacy and sexuality. 

As the artist travels through and experiences the life cycles of womanhood the journey continues to be told.
